Buying an existing vending business

Expect to see financial statements, a machine list with ages and serial numbers, every location agreement, supplier accounts and staff. Most buyers use an accountant to check the books and a lawyer for the share or asset purchase agreement.

  • Asset purchase: you buy the machines and agreements, not the company. Cleaner for buyers.
  • Share purchase: you buy the company, including its history. Sometimes better for the seller's taxes.

Financing a vending business

Banks and the Canada Small Business Financing Program can lend against equipment, and many sellers carry part of the price as a vendor take-back. Vendor financing is also a good sign the seller believes the numbers.

Questions

How much is a vending business worth?

Most small vending businesses sell for 1.5 to 3 times annual seller's discretionary earnings, plus inventory. The quality and length of the location contracts matter as much as the revenue.

Is a vending machine business profitable in Canada?

It can be. Well-placed snack and combo machines commonly gross $300–$1,500 a month each, and margins after product and location commission run 20–40%. Location quality is almost everything.
