What to check before you buy a used machine
Ask for a photo of the serial plate and a video of the machine vending. A machine that powers on but jams on one spiral is a cheap fix; a dead compressor on a drink machine is not.
- Refrigeration: drink and combo machines should hold 3–4 °C within an hour of being plugged in.
- Payment: older coin-and-bill units can take a card reader, but budget $300–$600 for the reader and a telemetry plan.
- Keys: make sure both the door key and the coin box key come with it.
- Moving: most full-size machines weigh 270–360 kg. Ask whether delivery or a liftgate pickup is possible.
Used vs refurbished
"Used" means sold as-is from a location or a warehouse. "Refurbished" means a dealer has cleaned it, replaced worn parts and tested it, usually with a short warranty. Refurbished machines cost more, but they are the safer first machine if you have never worked on one.
Questions
How much does a used vending machine cost in Canada?
Most used snack machines list between $1,000 and $3,000, used combo machines between $1,500 and $4,000, and used drink machines between $1,200 and $3,500, depending on age, payment hardware and condition. Our cost guide tracks real asking prices from listings on this site.
Can I add a card reader to a used machine?
Usually, yes. Most machines built since the late 1990s use a standard MDB connection, so a modern card reader plugs in. Check the model with the reader maker before you buy.
